Many Colors from a Few -
We often use many more different tube colors than we need to in order to create a successful painting. Below are 200 different mixtures made from just the 4 tube colors to the left: Ultramarine Blue, Permanent Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Light Hue, and White. This is just a sample of what can be done with these colors - as I look at the chart now I realize that I could have mixed many more greens than I did. Some of the color mixtures in the chart may look the same (due to the limitations of reproducing paint colors on a computer screen) but they are all subtley different on the physical chart itself. Using a limited palette like the 4 tube colors used here can help harmonize the color mixtures in your painting. Painting with fewer colors also means fewer tubes of paint to lug around when painting outdoors, and valuable color mixing skill can be gained by working with such limited resources.
