This tutorial will show you a step-by-step process for creating a painting, starting with a few large flat shapes of color, moving on to medium-sized shapes of color, and finishing with detail.

The process begins with drawing the 5 to 12 major shapes in your still life. Here I have outlined 5, one for the background, one for the flowers, one for the foliage, one for the flowerpot, and one for the tablecloth. Note that these shapes are drawn simply and quickly using a simplification technique called surround the group, without indicating every flower petal and leaf - the drawing stage can take as little as 1 minute.
