Each shape is then filled in with the average color for that area. While the photo contains hundreds of variations of color in each of our 5 shapes, at this stage we will be filling in each shape with only one color mixture.

Because these color mixtures represent an average color, we won’t be filling in the shapes with the lightest or darkest color for an area, but something in the middle. For example, note that for the shape of the flower mass, I’ve chosen a medium pink that occurs in that area of the photo - not the lightest or darkest pinks that occur in the flowers.

The only exception is the background - because the focal point of my painting is the flowers, I’ve decided to make the background one uniform dark color to make them show up even more.
