Finally, I add a fifth value, a dark gray inbetween the medium gray and black. This helps to soften the transitions from the black shadows to the medium gray areas.

For all of these value studies, it is best to leave all of the edges sharp, rather than blending them. Of course, there will be areas that will jump out as needing blending to look good. If you are using oils to do these studies, you can blend these areas at the end if you wish, but to do so before defeats the purpose of finding out what the values can and can't do by themselves.
